We study how this system can be implemented on popular wearable devices (i.e., Android Wear and Tizen) and the resulting limitations. We examine the key parameters that affect the accuracy of the detected contacts and their impact on power consumption.

In this paper, we present an extensive evaluation of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) as a technology to monitor people proximity in the workplace. Technology has been recently employed to cut costs and improve output, however precise interaction dynamics gathering often requires individuals to wear custom hardware.

Questionnaires and direct observations have often been used as mechanisms to identify office based interactions, however, these are either very time consuming, yield coarse grained information or do not scale to large numbers of people. The ability to detect and distinguish interactions in the workplace can shed light over productivity, team work and on employees' use of space. Using mobile phone sensors already carried by the majority of people in a crowd makes our approach particularly well suited to real-life analysis of crowd behaviour and influence strategies. By utilizing a community detection based method, we further detected the various group formation that exist within the crowd.

We built a machine learning system based on gradient-boosted trees that predicts both 1:1 and group interactions with 77.8% precision and 86.5% recall, a 30.2% performance increase compared to a proximity-based approach. To inform the development of such system, we conducted a study with 24 participants, where we asked them to socialize with each other for 45 minutes. In this work, we present a system for detecting stationary social interactions inside crowds, leveraging multi-modal mobile sensing data such as Bluetooth Smart (BLE), accelerometer and gyroscope. However, mobile phones offer easier means for data collection that is easy to analyze and can preserve the user's privacy.

Currently, detecting social interactions is often performed using a variety of methods including ethnographic studies, computer vision techniques and manual annotation-based data analysis. The ability to automatically detect and remember these types of interactions is not only beneficial for individuals interested in their behavior in crowded situations, but also of interest to those who analyze crowd behavior. This could provide similar functionality to a Amazon Dash if a mobile app is running nearby that can forward the detection to a similar cloud sever as used for an Amazon Dash solution.Remembering our day-to-day social interactions is challenging even if you aren't a blue memory challenged fish. Most Bluetooth LE beacons are always transmitting, although it is possible to buy ones that are click-on click-off like the RadBeacon Dot. You must write an app on the mobile phone then does something when it detects the beacon transmission is detected. These devices are much simpler, and rely on another bluetooth-enabled computer within 40 meters to be listening (typically a mobile phone).

You must write some code and deploy it to a cloud server to do something whenever somebody taps the button.īluetooth LE beacons like iBeacon are transmit only Bluetooth LE devices that do not connect to the internet, but simply sent out a bluetooth packet with a unique identifier. Other IoT buttons work similarly, although some connect to the internet via a nearby mobile device using Bluetooth. IoT buttons like Amazon Dash and Bluetooth LE beacons like iBeacon have fundamental differences:Īmazon Dash connects to the internet over WiFi to make a web service call on button press, and requires configuration with your WiFi network.
